| Introduction Recycling Demolition Ordering Countertop Cooktop
|
Right from the start, I wanted to reuse as
much of the existing materials as possible. One of the challenges was
that the existing cabinets were custom made of pine and plywood. They
were in good shape, well constructed, but their contruction did not
lead to using in any configuration other than the original one. It took
some careful disassembly, and "reconstruction", as well as
creative design of the new kitchen, to reuse them. We did manage to
reuse all of the cabinets, except for one 24in section of the "L".
Here's what we re-used: 1 - 36" cabinet. Originally a part of a 54 in "L", with one 24" section facing out into the keeping room, and the rest divided between flat pan storage, and pots and pans storage. A 24" drawer was not used. The became the cabinet for the oven. It took the most reconstruction, including removing the nice raise panel back (which is now attached to the back of the cabinets facing the living room).

2- 20" Drawer cabinet. Moved to face out into the living room, taking up dead corner space. 3- 54" sink base, consisting of a 30" sink base and 24" of blind cabinet space. This became the cooktop cabinet. There were no wall cabinets, but there were two shelves with cup hooks, and one other open shelving unit. We used part of a shelf and hook unit and matched it back up with the two shelf unit. It fits the space perfectly, and when pained will look great. The other hook and shelf units might be used when we tackle the apartment kitchen, which we think we will remodel into a mud room. It would make a great place to hang coats, etc. The original countertop was butcher block. I intend to use one section as a top for a simple desk, after it is refinished. The second section, was fragmented with the sink, and thus largely un-useable. |
