Update! Well, the kitchen remodel is almost finished. The only thinks left are knockout items - Cabinet knobs, some trim work, etc.

When we moved into our home, the kitchen consisted of a 14x17 keeping room, with a shed addition. The addition was split into a half bath, which took up 1/3 of the space, and a working kitchen area, taking up the remainder. In addition, there was a bump out into the living room. One half of the bump-out housed the refrigerator, faqcing towards the kitchen, while the other half was a door-oer-door storage area, facing the living room.

So we had a spacious kitchen, but the working area was designed to accomodate one cook. The layout of the kitchen made it nearly impossible for us to use the keeping room portion as working kitchen space, as it had four doors, two windows and a large fireplace.

This was a very messy job. The walls of the bath were tile halfway up, and they could only be removed by smashing them. Then we removed wall between the kitchen area and the bath, followed by the  the stove and peninsula.

The floor jack in the picture was put in place soon after we moved in, but before the kitchen work was started. When they put the shed addition on, probably in the 1950s, they removed several studs on what was then the outside wall. This left the beam above with a span of over 10 feet, and the floor in the bedroom above flexed like crazy!
